Making a Difference for Women Honorary Awards

Around the world, many women are working to improve the lives of women and girls. Women work to improve conditions for women and girls through their personal or volunteer efforts as well as giving of their professional skills. The Soroptimist Making a Difference for Women Award is designed to honor these women. These women are not Sorptimists, but their work helps promote the issues that are important to Soroptimists.

Violet Richardson Award

This award is an annual award funded by The Soroptimist International of the Americas and recognizes young women between the ages of 14-17 who make the community and world a better place through volunteer efforts. The award is named for the first president of the first Soroptimist club organized in 1921.

Women's Opportunity Award

This award is an annual award funded by Soroptimist International of the Americas and is Soroptimist International of the America's major service project. The program aids women who, as heads of their households, must enter or return to the workforce in order to support themselves and their families. Applications are accepted each year from July 1 to December 1.

Our Pledge
I pledge allegiance to Soroptimist and to the ideals for which it stands:
The Sincerity of Friendship
The Joy of Achievement
The Dignity of Service
The Integrity of Profession
The Love of Country

I will put forth my greatest effort to promote, uphold and defend these ideals for a larger fellowship in HOME, in SOCIETY, in BUSINESS - for COUNTRY and for GOD.

WOMEN'S OPPORTUNITY AWARD

This program represents Soroptimist's major service project. The award was established by Soroptimist International of the Americas in 1972 to assist women entering or re-entering the workforce in obtaining the education and skills training they need to improve their employment status.

Women's Opportunity Awards are designed to give women heads of household, who provide the primary source of financial support for their families, the opportunity to achieve their career goals--an opportunity they have not previously had, whether because of economic or social barriers, or personal circumstances. These awards are for women who are attending, or have been accepted to, a vocational/skills training program, or an undergraduate degree program.

Eligible applicants must be female heads of household, who are enrolled in or have been accepted to a voca-tional/skills training program, or an undergraduate degree program. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, and cannot have already earned an under-graduate degree. Only residents of Soroptimist International of the Americas' 18 member countries and territories are eligible to apply.

Club winners become eligible to receive region-level awards. Every year, 26 geographic regions throughout North, Central and South America, and Asia each grant one $5,000 first-place award, and two $3,000 awards. The first place winners continue to compete for federation awards of $10,000.
